No. 1 Miami Hurricanes pound Kent State in baseball. Now it’s on to the Florida Gators

It didn’t take long for the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes to assert their dominance Wednesday against Kent State University.

Coming off a weekend sweep of Rutgers, the Canes (4-0) scored 10 runs Wednesday in the first three innings of their first mid-week game of 2020, proceeding to crush the Golden Flashes 12-0 at Mark Light Field.

Next up: the nemesis Florida Gators, ranked No. 2 behind the Hurricanes in the D1Baseball poll and scheduled to meet Miami at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at the Light.

The Gators defeated Jacksonville on Wednesday night in 10 innings in Jacksonville 4-3.

The Canes made their statement early Wednesday, when junior Alex Toral, who was No. 3 in the nation last year with 24 home runs, hit his first homer of the season to right-center. The three-run shot also drove home Raymond Gil (reached on error) and Adrian Del Castillo (single).

Tony Jenkins also hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs Wednesday.

UM, which had 11 hits, went on to score seven in the third inning and two in the fourth.

Miami used seven pitchers. Freshman Alex McFarlane earned his first career win.
