Michael Irvin implied the Cowboys might pursue Tom Brady. He recently changed his tune .
Michael Irvin is slowly but surely trying to remove the foot from his mouth.
Appearing Friday on WEII’s “Dale and Keefe,” the Cowboys legend told the hosts he had learned from “very significant people” that his former team could pursue Tom Brady this offseason.
“I am telling you right now, at the Super Bowl in Miami, some very significant people that I had conversations [with were] leaning in that same direction [of Dallas pursuing Brady],” he said. “It was shocking. I had a vodka cranberry in my hand and when they said it to me, I put the drink down and said, ‘Let’s talk a little bit more about this.’ I promise you, I had a conversation with people, I can’t tell you who, about that same scenario going down.”
A key part of this scenario would be Dallas putting the franchise tag on Dak Prescott, who would become an unrestricted free agent on March 18. That would allow the Cowboys to either trade Prescott or have the choice of not matching another team’s offer.
Although Irvin did add that he wasn’t sure about the viability of the deal, the damage was already done. Two days later, the former Hurricane tried dousing the flames.
“I never said Jerry [Jones] or anyone in the organization said this to me. It was NOT anyone with the @dallascowboys,” he tweeted Sunday morning.
As if his 12 seasons in Dallas and three Super Bowl rings meant nothing, Irvin acted like he never implied anyone from the Cowboys spoke to him.
“This is AMAZING!! Not once did I say anything about any1 in the @dallascowboys organization speaking w me regarding @TomBrady,” he added.
To his credit, he never said that the “significant people” had any affiliation with the Cowboys. But it most certainly was implied. Like this was Michael Jerome Irvin saying this, not some scrub off the streets.
Imagine if Dwyane Wade had repeated the same verbiage about the Heat trying to bring back LeBron James in 2021. Fans, for better or worse, have no choice but to assume he talked with Pat Riley or somebody considering Wade’s status in Miami. The same goes for Irvin and Dallas.
Next time, he might want to keep drinking the vodka cranberry. Or, better yet, clarify who he was speaking with from the beginning.
