WR Keyshawn Smith signed with Washington State last month. He’s now UM’s newest addition
The Miami Hurricanes have added some wide receiver help to their Class of 2020 and it did some in an unusual manner. Keyshawn Smith, who signed a national letter of intent with the Washington State Cougars in the early signing period, flipped to Miami on Tuesday, orally committing to the Hurricanes just a little more than a month after he picked Washington State.
While Smith didn’t specify his enrollment plans in the Twitter message he used to announce his commitment, 247Sports.com reported Miami is working to get Smith to Coral Gables for the current semester so he can take part in spring practices.
Smith is a brand new target for the Hurricanes, who need to add more receivers given their impending transition to a spread offense. The three-star wide receiver didn’t publicly claim a scholarship offer from Miami before he committed to the Hurricanes. The 6-foot, 170-pound senior from Lincoln in San Diego orally committed to the Cougars last month after taking an official visit to Pullman, then signed with Washington State later in the month. He also picked up an offer from the Tennessee Volunteers last month before he picked the Cougars.
Smith, however, apparently was able to get out of his letter of intent following the departure of former Washington State coach Mike Leach, who took the same job with the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Jan. 9. He picked Miami even though the Hurricanes don’t currently have a wide receivers coach after Taylor Stubblefield left to take the same job with the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and tight ends coach Stephen Field helped pull Smith out of California.
Although he sits outside the top 1,000 in the 247Sports composite rankings for the 2020 recruiting class, Smith was highly productive as a senior for the Hornets. The wideout caught 46 passes for 808 and eight touchdowns and a two-point conversion in 13 games for Lincoln. He also ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, threw a touchdown pass, and returned a punt and a kick for a touchdown. He even went 5 of 5 on extra points for the Hornets.
Smith’s commitment gives Miami four wide receivers in its 2020 class. Under Armour All-American wide receivers Michael Redding III and Dazalin Worsham, and three-star athlete Xavier Restrepo are all already on campus after enrolling earlier this month.
