Miami’s 2020 schedule: only one open weekend, November FSU and eight straight ACC games

The Miami Hurricanes already jump-started their 2020 quarterback competition when former Houston star D’Eriq King announced Monday that he was transferring to Miami in time to participate in spring practice.

On Wednesday, the Atlantic Coast Conference also made it easier for Hurricanes fans to erase that ugly 6-7 2019 slate and replace it with a clean one to begin the new decade. The newly released 2020 schedule has only one open date compared to three in 2019 (which were followed by losses each time) — and no opponents that finished this past season ranked among the final AP top 25.

Instead of the highly unusual five-game homestand that punctuated the first half of 2019, in 2020 the home/road games fairly quickly settle into an alternating pattern until the end. So, grab your calendars and start looking ahead, because you can be sure the Hurricanes are doing just that.

After this year’s formerly reported Sept. 5 home opener against Temple (8-5 in 2019), where Miami coach Manny Diaz was the head coach for two-and-a-half weeks before resigning to take the UM job, there’s Wagner College (1-11) of the FCS on Sept. 12, Alabama-Birmingham (UAB, 9-5) of Conference USA on Sept. 19 and the Hurricanes’ first 2020 road trip to Michigan State (7-6) on Sept. 26.

Miami begins its eight-game conference schedule at home at Hard Rock Stadium against Pittsburgh (8-5) on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The next Friday, Oct. 9, the Canes play their only non-Saturday game of the regular season on the road at Wake Forest (8-5) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Then, it’s UM’s only bye weekend of the season, as no game is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Saturday, Oct. 24, is a home game against North Carolina (7-6).

Halloween for the Hurricanes will be spent on the road playing the Virginia Cavaliers (9-5) in Charlottesville. Though UM defeated Virginia in 2019, the Cavaliers did win the ACC Coastal Division and finished No. 25 in the Coaches’ Poll but was shut out of the AP.

UM returns to Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 7 seeking its fourth consecutive win against Florida State (6-7), before leaving the next two weekends for a Nov. 14 game at Virginia Tech (8-4) in Blacksburg and Nov. 21 game at Georgia Tech (3-9) in Atlanta.

The Canes again end their regular season against the Duke Blue Devils (5-7), but this time, they hope, with a victory at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 28.
