UM women overwhelmed 87-41 by No. 7 Louisville -- worst Hurricanes loss in 13 years

The sight of Beatrice Mompremier on crutches is always distressing for the University of Miami basketball team, but it was especially demoralizing Thursday night, when the Hurricanes were facing their second Top-10 opponent in five days.

Mompremier, the Preseason AP All-American, watched from the bench with an injured foot as the Hurricanes struggled from start to finish and lost 87-41 to seventh-ranked Louisville. It was the worst Hurricanes loss in 13 years, since a 111-53 loss to No. 1 Maryland on Jan. 10, 2007.

Miami went 0-for-14 in the first quarter and Louisville took advantage, jumping to a 15-4 lead. Miami’s only points the first quarter came at the free throw line.

Junior guard Iggy Allen came off the bench with tons of energy, made back-to-back baskets for UM early in the second quarter, but the Cardinals (15-1, 4-0 ACC) continued to dominate. Miami shot 3-of-26 for the half, and Louisville took a 37-16 lead into halftime.

“We were a bad basketball team and Louisville was a great team,” said UM coach Katie Meier. “I am just shocked at our performance. Don’t want to take away from Louisville, but I sure didn’t expect to get beat this bad. I need to reevaluate a lot. The thing I can’t handle is when it got hard, we hid and that is unacceptable. I did not expect a lack of effort.

“Lack of fight is something that shocks me and we have to address.”

Dana Evans led Louisville with 16 points. Yacine Diop had 15, Kylee Shook 14 and Jazmine Jones 10. Brianna Jackson had 13 for UM. Miami’s starting guards Mykea Gray, Kelsey Marshall and Endia Banks were a combined 1-for-20.

UM was coming off a 73-62 home loss to eighth-ranked Florida State on Sunday. It was the first time in program history that Miami played back-to-back games against Top 10 opponents. The Hurricanes (9-6, 1-3 ACC) rank third in the nation in strength of schedule. Five of Miami’s six losses have been to Top-15 RPI teams – Oregon State (6), DePaul (9), Indiana (10), FSU (12), and Louisville (3).

The Canes are back home Sunday for a noon game against Syracuse.
