University of Miami

ESPN: ‘Miami sends sports writer Susan Miller Degnan into a tizzy.’ A nightmare 10 minutes

ESPN interviewed me last year for its My Story series that celebrates 150 years of college football and contacted me to say they chose my story to broadcast during this season.

And wouldn’t you know my cohort David Wilson saw it on SportsCenter today when we were getting ready to leave Shreveport to head home after that sad performance by the Hurricanes on Thursday in the Independence Bowl.

I have been covering University of Miami football since Butch Davis took over as head coach in 1995, and then became the main beat writer in 2000, a year before the Hurricanes won their last of five national titles. So, as any real Canes fan would know, I’ve seen it all, from the lowest lows to the highest highs and now, after UM’s 14-0 shutout loss to Louisiana Tech on Thursday, back to the depths.

ESPN asked me to describe a meaningful moment during my career, and I couldn’t help but think back on the nightmare game of all nightmare games for not only the Canes, but myself, and by extension, my three children.

So, here it is, all 59 seconds! Hopefully it won’t be too maddening.
