Podcast: What went wrong with Miami’s recruiting class? And how can Canes salvage it?

The early signing period is finally here and the Miami Hurricanes’ class is, at least for now, disappointing. Entering the day, Miami holds only four commitments from offensive players and sits outside the top 30 in the 247Sports.com composite team rankings.

It all could change in the next few weeks, though, and David Wilson and Jordan McPherson take a look at what’s on the horizon for the Hurricanes. On Wednesday, five-star tackle Evan Neal, four-star tight end Keon Zipperer and four-star defensive end Lloyd Summerall are all set to make decisions. Next month, five-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood and four-star cornerback Tyrique Stevenson will both make their decisions public. Miami (7-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast) has a chance to salvage its class, but can it get the job done?

The Class of 2019 still has some positives, though. The defensive class is strong and should only get stronger. The haul of skill position players has a chance to be elite. The Hurricanes even have a new punter coming in from the junior college ranks.

Miami still has time to turn things around by National Signing Day, but it might be time to temper expectations for the early signing period. The Eye on the U podcast this week will get you prepared for the biggest day of the recruiting calendar — the good and the bad, which is on the way for the Hurricanes.

And be sure to follow the Miami Herald all day Wednesday to keep up with all the signings around Miami-Dade and Broward counties, plus everyone who signs with the Hurricanes.
