Freshman guard Mykea Gray, at 5-4 the smallest player on the University of Miami women’s basketball team, on Monday was named ACC Rookie of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
The Upper Marlboro, Md., native is averaging 18 points per game, which ranks sixth in the conference and first among ACC freshmen. Last week, Gray averaged 16.7 points over three games, including a team-high 21 points in a 79-71 loss to No. 15 Maryland on Sunday. She has scored in double figures in all six games, and had 20-plus three times.
“I’m comfortable with my teammates and the system my coaches put into place,” said Gray, a four-star recruit who chose UM over DePaul, George Washington, Georgia, Penn State, Seton Hall, Rhode Island, USF and Temple.
The only other Hurricane to win ACC Rookie of the Week multiple times was Shenise Johnson, who did it on three occasions during the 2008-09 season.
