‘There’s no magic wand.’ New FSU coordinator references Harry Potter and more notes.
Florida State’s new coordinators, Kenny Dillingham and Adam Fuller, had an introductory press conference Monday in Tallahassee.
There was a funny exchange between the two as Fuller finished talking about his defense and left the podium for Dillingham to discuss the offense.
“I’m going to support you, just don’t turn it over,” Fuller joked with Dillingham as he left the podium, according to Seminoles.com.
Later, Dillingham dropped in a Harry Potter reference when discussing recruiting.
“There’s no magic wand, even though I like Harry Potter,” Dillingham said, according to Seminoles.com.
FSU coach Mike Norvell hired Dillingham from Auburn and Fuller from Memphis. Both previously served on Norvell’s staff at Memphis.
Here are some other notes from Dillingham:
▪ Running a pro-style offense that plays fast, where the standard for quarterbacks in the offense is 3,500 total yards (passing/receiving) and 35 touchdowns.
▪ Offensive style is to get the ball to playmakers in 1-on-1 battles, and they have to win their 1-on-1 matchups.
▪ Dillingham said they want winners and smart players at QB.
▪ Dillingham first met Norvell when he was coaching in high school. Norvell offered Dillingham the chance to watch film and sit in on meetings, and he ended up sitting in on every Arizona State meeting that spring. Dillingham calls Norvell an innovator of the RPO.
And here’s some other notes from Fuller’s portion of the press conference:
▪ Fuller said he knew he wanted to work with Norvell based off his first phone conversation, before even meeting him.
▪ Going up against Norvell’s offense (in practice) will help the defense become flexible to take on different offenses.
▪ Fuller discussed his first coaching job paid $2,000 and was at Worcester Polytechnic.
▪ Wants defense to be fast, tough and smart.
▪ Not making assumptions about players yet and is constantly learning about the players.
▪ Fuller said FSU was changing the game on defense when he was growing up.
▪ Fuller said they’re vetting people to fill out the defensive staff.
