National Football League players show Kevin Byard the respect he has earned
The New England Patriots players have bought into safety Kevin Byard. It took no time for the free-agent pickup from the Chicago Bears to earn the trust of his new mates.
Friday morning, their belief in Byard was galvanized a bit as the 10-year veteran was announced at No. 61 in the "NFL Top 100," a list compiled from the votes of players around the National Football League.
Carlton Davis is a huge believer
"He brings what every great safety would bring to a defense … communication, knowledge, experience, ball skills. You can name it, he's done it," said veteran cornerback Carlton Davis back in June minicamp. "He's played this long, at a high level for so long. He's showing it in practice and meeting rooms, just giving us all a little more confidence back there, knowing he's back there and orchestrating the show."
Byard's third appearance on the NFL Top 100 coincides with his third All-Pro season. He led the NFL in interceptions for 2025 with seven despite having a very low target percentage of 7.5.
Back home in Vrabel system
Playing on his fourth team this year, Byard has shown the ability to adjust in most any scheme thrown at him.
Reconnecting with the Mike Vrabel/Zak Kuhr led defense in New England, will be beneficial. It's a system in which he excelled during in his eight seasons with the Titans. The Middle Tennessee State product's first two First-Team All-Pro seasons came while playing for Vrabel.
Titans defensive reunion
The reunion in New England at age 32 was a huge reason for his signing with the Patriots – not just Vrabel but assistants like defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr and secondary coach Scott Booker, who were just starting out back then with the Titans.
"It's very cool from seeing these guys in Tennessee, now here, running their own rooms, running their groups," Byard said in May. "It's just a testament to those guys putting in the work and (Vrabel's) trust in them to be able to move up.
"(Vrabel is) the same old guy that I recognized from Tennessee."
