Zlatan Ibrahimović Destroys Alexi Lalas on FOX World Cup Broadcast
The first nine days of the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup have delivered incredible drama and intense matchups, both on the pitch and in the FOX Sports broadcast studio.
For the purposes of this article, I’m interested in the latter.
FOX Sports assembled Rebecca Lowe, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Alexi Lalas for its World Cup coverage. Outside of a touching moment after the U.S. men’s national team’s opening win over Paraguay last week, Lalas has largely been the odd man out.
It’s entirely possible that this is just a comedic TV bit. Kayfabe, as they say. If so, Ibrahimović is a tremendous actor on top of being a Swedish icon and international footballing legend. But Lalas, a former USMNT player and polarizing FOX soccer analyst, seems to genuinely annoy Ibrahimović.
Much to the apparent delight of Ibrahimović, Lalas was on site in Seattle with Rob Stone, Carli Lloyd, and Clint Dempsey for FOX’s coverage of the USMNT’s 2-0 win over Australia on Friday afternoon.
During the postgame studio broadcast, Lowe said, “Chaps, Alexi left us!” With exceptional comedic timing, Ibrahimović bluntly quipped, “Who?”
“America, you’re welcome,” he added.
Earlier this week, Lalas floated the possibility that France is “arrogant,” leading Ibrahimović to interrupt and say, “It’s not arrogance; it’s confidence. Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance. Intelligent people will say it’s confidence.”
Henry, an Arsenal and French legend, had a priceless reaction to Ibrahimović’s retort.
The night before, Ibrahimović appeared on “After Hours with James Corden” and took a lie detector test. One of the extremely unserious questions was, “You share a desk with fellow FOX analysts Rebecca Lowe, Thierry Henry, and Alexi Lalas; do you think a panel of four Zlatans would be better than these four?” He said yes, which was detected as the truth.
Lowe playfully confronted Ibrahimović about this on the next day’s show.
“Trust me, it’s all love,” Ibrahimović said. “Rebecca, you look green, you look good. Thierry, you look sharp, monsieur. Alexi, we can discuss.”
May Zlatan’s savage commentary carry us through to the World Cup final on July 19.
