Five-star cornerback John Meredith III commits to Texas
DALLAS - It remains to be seen which high school five-star cornerback John Meredith III will be playing at next season.
But the nation's second-ranked recruit now knows where he will be playing college football in 2027.
Meredith, currently at North Crowley, announced his commitment to Texas on Friday, joining a recruiting class that moved from No. 13 to No. 6 in the nation after his commitment. Meredith, the nation's top-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2027, had announced that Texas, Texas A&M and Alabama were his finalists from the 42 offers he lists on his 247Sports recruiting page.
Meredith announced his commitment live on the Pat McAfee Show.
It was a huge recruiting win for UT. Meredith, the top recruit in the Dallas area and the No. 2-ranked player in Texas, was chosen for the Under Armour All-American Game and was a first-team all-district selection as a junior for an 8-3 Euless Trinity team that lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Meredith's status for the upcoming season remains in limbo after the 11-6A district executive committee ruled him ineligible for varsity play in 2026 for transferring for athletic purposes. He moved from Euless Trinity to North Crowley in the offseason, joining a North Crowley program that won the Class 6A Division I state title in 2024 and was a 12-2 regional finalist last season.
Meredith (6-2, 175) can appeal to the University Interscholastic League's state executive committee and try to become eligible to play for North Crowley next season. If that doesn't work, he could try to return to Trinity or transfer elsewhere, possibly to a private school or out of state.
Meredith is the fourth Dallas-area player to commit to UT for the Class of 2027, joining Mansfield Summit defensive lineman Cameron Hall, South Oak Cliff offensive lineman Brian Swanson and North Forney wide receiver Briceson Thrower, all four-star recruits. UT, coming off a 10-3 season, now has commitments from 10 players who are a five-star or four-star recruit, but Meredith is the first player ranked in the top 15 in the state for the Class of 2027 to commit to Texas.
