Mark Schwarzer Fires Back at USMNT Pundits: 'Leave Australia Alone'

The Group D clash between the USMNT and Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has unexpectedly turned into a serious rivalry before the two teams even face off.

Although both nations were initially upbeat about facing each other, recent developments, especially comments from American pundits, have added extra intensity to the matchup.

Statements made by American analyst Mike Grella particularly caused a stir among Socceroos fans after he called the matchup a "layup" fixture for the co-hosts.

Grella's comments have now drawn a response from Australian legend Mark Schwarzer.

The 53-year-old Schwarzer, in a recent interview, called out analysts who push controversial opinions in a bid to attract more attention.

"The world we're in today, and certainly what I've experienced at the moment since the period of time I've been in the US, and certainly when it comes to football soccer pundits over here, the one with the most outrageous statement is the one that gets the most work opportunities and the most airtime and the most clicks.

"I'm not that type of person, and each to their own. If that's what floats their boats and that's what gives them their opportunity of airtime and their moments of fame, then so be it. Like, I don't really care," he added.

Schwarzer, who spent his professional career playing in top leagues, claimed that certain remarks were blatantly disrespectful toward the Australian side.

"What it is about is the performances on the pitch. There is a point, though, where you've got to be careful about the disrespect, and I think at the moment they're right there with being very disrespectful."

Expressing his frustration, Schwarzer urged American pundits to show more respect towards Australian soccer.

"Yeah, they can be confident about their own performances, talk about your own team, leave us alone, and then let's see what happens in the game.

"That, for me, is where you've got to show a little respect, and at the moment there's very little of that."
