Lakers' Big Man Labeled ‘Biggest Unknown' Ahead of Free Agency

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly negotiating with LeBron James on a new contract ahead of the NBA free agency period.

The Lakers also need to figure out what to do with All-Star Austin Reaves, who is set to hit restricted free agency and is set to command a contract in the $178 million range from the Brooklyn Nets.

Those are two key factors that need to be addressed in one way or another. However, there are other players facing critical decisions on the LA front this summer.

One of them is big man Rui Hachimura, who is being labeled as the "biggest unknown" amid the Lakers' summer plans.

"The biggest unknown is swingman Rui Hachimura," ESPN's Dave McMenamin wrote in his latest Lakers intel piece.

"Several league sources told ESPN they believe Hachimura could be the odd man out and that he might need to explore the market to find a desired deal," McMenamin added.

The Lakers acquired Hachimura in a deal with the Washington Wizards at the 2023 trade deadline. LA then re-signed Hachimura to a three-year, $51 million deal that summer.

Hachimura's numbers took a bit of a hit this season as he averaged 11.5 points with 3.3 rebounds per game during the regular season.

What About Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard?

Two other players set for free agency are Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard, both of whom played a key role.

Kennard was acquired in a deal with the Atlanta Hawks at the 2026 deadline, but the expectation is that the Lakers have interest in reunions with both players.

"The Lakers are interested in retaining Marcus Smart and sharpshooter Luke Kennard, sources told ESPN," McMenamin wrote.

Smart has until the end of June to exercise the final year of his contract at $5.4 million, and Kennard is an unrestricted free agent after finishing his one-year deal.

Both players were key pieces for JJ Redick's team this season.

Right now, there are plenty of decisions LA has to make over the next few weeks.
