UFC Freedom 250 Viewership Numbers Break Record, Paramount+ Says
UFC Freedom 250 averaged 7 million viewers in the United States and drew a total of 17 million viewers across the U.S. and Latin America, including those who watched portions of the MMA fights, according to viewership data released by Paramount+, Reuters reports.
The event became the most-watched program ever on Paramount+, the company said. The card’s unique setting, combined with a championship main event between Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria, seemingly helped boost the show.
The event was held on the South Lawn of the White House on President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The president and UFC CEO Dana White attended the fights, along with numerous other lawmakers and officials.
Newsweek reached out to Nielsen via email on Thursday night for comment.
What To Know
While the numbers are large by UFC standards, they still trail the biggest events in American sports.
For comparison, the first 12 group-stage matches of the World Cup drew an average of 7.5 million viewers on the Spanish-language network Telemundo, the Los Angeles Times reported, which is also streamed on Peacock. Through the first 16 group-stage matches, an average of 6 million viewers have watched on Fox and the cable network FS1, according to Nielsen data.
Super Bowl broadcasts have recently attracted between 110-125 million viewers in the United States alone.
Nevertheless, UFC Freedom 250 compares favorably with many other major sporting events, especially considering it was streamed exclusively on Paramount+ rather than airing on traditional broadcast television.
The event’s 7 million-viewer average surpassed the audience for UFC’s landmark FOX debut in 2011, which averaged roughly 5.7 million viewers, the New York Times previously reported.
Before UFC Freedom 250 drew 7 million viewers, the previous Paramount-era record was UFC 324 in January, which attracted about 5 million viewers. UFC 324 was significant because it was the first numbered UFC event shown under UFC’s new seven-year, multibillion-dollar broadcasting agreement with Paramount, The Athletic reports.
The comparison becomes a bit more noticeable when measured against Netflix’s 2024 boxing event featuring Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.
According to Netflix, the fight attracted more than 108 million live viewers globally, peaking at 65 million concurrent streams, including 38 million concurrent streams in the United States. The total audience estimate increased when including replay viewing after the live broadcast, with Netflix estimating 125 million viewers.
According to a release from ESPN, Game 3 of the NBA Finals this month averaged 23.8 million viewers across ABC and ESPN platforms, making it the most-watched Finals Game 3 since 1998. The championship series itself averaged more than 20 million viewers, ESPN reports, nearly three times the U.S. audience of UFC Freedom 250. Trump attended Game 3 and notably received a mixed welcome when broadcast on the screens inside Madison Square Garden.
The release of the official figures comes on the heels of UFC commentator Joe Rogan suggesting that the UFC Freedom 250 event may have reached as many as 150 million viewers by Monday. Rogan called it “the wildest experience” and was “the greatest night of fights of all time.”
What’s Next
The event demonstrated the UFC’s ability to attract mainstream attention outside of the traditional pay-per-view model and showcased the drawing power of a major live event on a streaming platform.
