Cowboys Add Former Second-Round WR Days After Minicamp Ends

Many expected the Dallas Cowboys to add some insurance at wide receiver during the 2026 draft with George Pickens' playing status up in the air.

But now that Pickens has signed his one-year franchise tender, the need for added WR depth may not be as pressing.

But the Cowboys aren't taking any chances. According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Dallas made three roster additions on Thursday, including a former second-round wide receiver.

"The Cowboys have agreed to terms with 3 UFL players: WR Denzel Mims, CB Ameer Speed, OL Chris Glaser, per sources," Archer reported. "To make room, Matt Hennessy to IR and DB Corey Ballentine and WR Romello Brinson have been released. One roster spot remains open as training camp awaits."

Mims, the 59th overall pick in the 2020 draft, has had a tumultuous career since leaving Baylor.

He played three seasons with the Jets, totaling 42 catches and 676 yards with zero touchdowns, but he hasn't played an NFL down in three years. After leaving New York, Mims signed with the Detroit Lions (2023), Pittsburgh Steelers (2023), and Jacksonville Jaguars (2024) but never made it to any of their active rosters.

Mims spent the 2025 season with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the United Football League, logging six receptions for 51 yards. He was drafted to the Dallas Renegades in the 2026 UFL draft. He played in two games for the team, totaling six catches for 55 yards.

The 28-year-old Mims gives the Cowboys some added insurance at receiver.

Behind Pickens and All-Pro CeeDee Lamb, Dallas has veterans KaVontae Turpin, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Ryan Flournoy, Jonathan Mingo, and Tyler Johnson plus rookies Romello Brinson, Camden Brown, Jordan Hudson, Anthony Smith, and Jaden Smith.
