Fantasy Basketball 2026-27: The Offseason Dominoes That Could Change Draft Boards

Dominoes can be fun, but one move can also make them topple over quickly and create chaos. Such is the case at the heart of the NBA offseason, where it takes just one draft pick or trade move to unleash havoc.

And for fantasy basketball managers who are finalizing their draft boards ahead of the 2026-27 season, that havoc can make building next season's roster a real pain.

The best course of action? Savvy managers should know about the biggest NBA offseason dominoes so they can be ready to move when one of them falls.

The Biggest Offseason Dominoes That Could Change Draft Boards

Who the Wizards take with No. 1 overall pick

Talk for the last few months has been about AJ Dybantsa being the projected first-overall selection. And the BYU product would almost certainly play big minutes as a rookie because of his well-rounded game. That being said, the Wizards also invited Darryn Peterson to Washington for a meeting in early June. The due diligence leaves mystery in its wake.

What the Nuggets do in free agency

Denver has a core that is locked in and experienced. It's also aging, expensive, and, as the 2025-26 season showed, very injury-prone. On top of it all, the Nuggets have a logjam in their frontcourt and are overbudget, and both need to change so they can retain emerging forward and pending RFA Peyton Watson.

Whether Austin Reaves Stays in LA

Never mind LeBron James and his potential retirement. The real needle-mover, fantasy-wise, will be Reaves and his landing spot for the 2026-27 campaign. The 28-year-old guard is a high-upside fantasy asset who is as efficient at shooting as he is at defending. He also declined his player option to enter free agency and seek a significant contract.

Where Giannis finally gets traded to

Feels like Giannis Antetokounmpo has topped the trade rumor mill for so long, doesn't it? The Heat have been the favored landing spot for months, but the Celtics have also remained in the mix. Of course, the Bucks are asking for a massive package before trading away the current face of their franchise.

Players and Teams Most Affected by These Dominoes

Bilal Coulibaly or Kyshawn George … or both

Dybantsa is a forward who would compete with Coulibaly for minutes, and George would have to split time with combo guard Peterson opposite Trae Young. Regardless of whether Washington selects a forward or guard, the incoming first overall pick will get plenty of opportunities to steal minutes and usage from established teammates.

Peyton Watson

Watson is coming off a breakout season when he posted 14.6 points on 49.1% shooting from the field and 41.1% from three-point range. He added 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.1 stocks. Retaining Watson is a top offseason priority for Denver, and there are obvious cost-cutting moves the front office can make. But seasoned managers know free agency can be full of surprises. And a move to a different team would make Watson's fantasy value harder to determine.

Luka Doncic

Doncic has said he wants Reaves to stay in LA, and his fantasy output goes through the roof when the duo plays together. Granted, if Los Angeles pulls all the right strings and retains Reaves, it will also take away money to beef up the rest of the roster around them. But a top-tier fantasy foundation starts with these two staying on the same starting lineup.

Milwaukee's fantasy output will greatly shift when Antetokounmpo leaves because of his multi-cat production. An obvious answer would be that Kyle Kuzma would get a boost in minutes and usage, but what if he is part of the trade package? If there's a trade with Miami that brings Tyler Herro to Wisconsin, will he fill in for Kevin Porter Jr. (who is expected to enter free agency this summer) and shift Milwaukee's power to the backcourt? There are a lot of fantasy scenarios that could play out for the Bucks, and none of them will be clear until the Giannis trade domino falls.

Draft Strategy: Preparing for Offseason Dominoes

Fantasy managers across all formats need to be aware of these dominoes, and how they can ripple and change your 2026-27 fantasy basketball draft strategy. Don't just look at the player at the center of the conversation. Look at how their landing spot for next season will impact the roster around them.

Dynasty managers can start targeting players once a draft pick or a big trade move goes down, but double-check the ripple effect. These dominoes can land talented players in crowded situations.

Managers in redraft leagues have to monitor situations through training camp. But being aware of these dominoes (and when they fall) will make curating draft strategy less of a headache.
