FOX Commentator Bloodied By Fans: Winners and Losers From World Cup Day 7

The first round of the World Cup is finished, and we set off for the second match days for team on Thursday with Group A and B back on the grass across North America.

But before we look ahead, we have to look at the best (and worst) moments of the opening leg of the tournament.

Who were the winners and losers on Day 7 of the World Cup?

Winner: Warren Barton

How tough is FOX commentator Warren Barton? Not only did he not skip a beat after having alcohol tossed on him during the first half of the Colombia vs. Uzbekistan game in Mexico City, the announcer kept calling the game in the second half after getting allegedly hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle that left him pouring blood on broadcast.

His commentating partner Jacqui Oatley tried her best to get him to focus on his bodily injury, but Barton continued on, finishing the broadcast with a goal call in the final minute of extra time for Colombia.

Loser: The Fan Who Hit Warren Barton

We get it, it’s the World Cup. We’re all excited. We all need hydration of some sort, that’s why we have breaks and such. But chucking a glass bottle in a stadium is never the right thing to do. At that point, you lose your status as a fan and don’t deserve to be allowed into a stadium around others. Barton was a pro, but no sports announcer should have to commentate while having a head wound.

Winner: DR Congo

It’s cool to score a goal in the World Cup.

It’s especially cool when you score the first goal ever for your nation at the World Cup.

Loser: Portugal

After scoring the opening goal against DR Congo in the sixth minute of the game, Portugal failed to produce another quality scoring chance for the rest of the game.

And no offense to DR Congo who played their hearts out, but there should be no world where if you’re a nation with serious intentions of winning the World Cup that you can’t string together passes for quality opportunities.

Cristiano Ronaldo looked all 41 years. The generational midfielder looked ordinary. The entire team looked like they had never played together before.

Portugal (for their sake) will be better and we saw what Argentina did last World Cup after losing to Saudi Arabia, but you can’t give them anything but a failing grade for their 2026 World Cup debut.
