NFL Insider Identifies 8 Teams as Logical Brendan Sorsby Fits

The NFL preseason is still a ways out, but a lot of eyes will now turn their attention to the Supplemental Draft in July.

The reason is that Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby is set to enter. Sorsby entered a rehab facility for a gambling addiction, and after he finished, he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

However, an injunction allowed him eligibility for 2026, but the move prompted plenty of criticism from the college football landscape. That ultimately led to Texas Tech and Sorsby mutually agreeing to part ways on Monday, which will allow Sorsby to enter the Supplemental Draft before the deadline.

No player has been selected in the Supplemental Draft since 2019, and a total of 46 players have been chosen since the draft began in 1977.

This year, Sorsby figures to be an easy choice for some team, even though there are concerns due to the gambling issues.

ESPN's Ben Solak identified eight potential fits for Sorsby in the Supplemental Draft:

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • New York Jets
  • Miami Dolphins
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Cleveland Browns

Solak named the Cardinals as the "most obvious choice," but the other teams all make sense, to some degree.

The Steelers have Aaron Rodgers back for one more year, but having Sorsby develop behind the future Hall of Famer could be very beneficial.

The Vikings are hoping Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy work out, and the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons both have uncertain QB rooms entering the 2026 campaign.

While Solak didn't name these teams as the eight on his initial list, he did identify them as outside candidates: The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I didn't even include the Buccaneers, who have one year left on Baker Mayfield's deal, or the Panthers, who have only Kenny Pickett and Will Grier behind Bryce Young right now. When quarterbacks with NFL size, NFL arm talent and NFL movement skills become available, depth charts that were previously endorsed by coaches suddenly become more tenuous," Solak wrote.

At the end of the day, the skills Sorsby brings to the table are too hard to ignore, even with the gambling issues, so it figures to be worth a team using a later draft choice to see if they can land him in the Supplemental Draft. Last season with the Cincinnati Bearcats, he recorded 2,800 passing yards on 61.6% completion rate, with 27 touchdowns to only five interceptions. He added nine scores on the ground.

Sorsby has a Pro Day scheduled for July, with the Supplemental Draft taking place shortly after.
