Steven Kwan's Contact Profile Has Fallen Off a Cliff, and the Numbers Say It Could Have Been Worse

Sometimes, hitters have a slow start to the season. Batting average won't match underlying metrics and at-bat quality, but everything squares itself out as the season progresses.

And then, there's Steven Kwan.

The Guardians' outfielder is having a rough 2026 at the plate. So much so that manager Stephen Vogt moved Kwan from his coveted leadoff-hitting role back to sixth or even seventh in the batting order. Kwan's stats have hit career lows, and the exact cause is hard to pinpoint.

What does this mean for his fantasy value and rest-of-season outlook? Let's take a peek.

The Numbers, Stated Plainly

Kwan's down year goes beyond his .215/.322/.263 slash line. Averages can fluctuate. It's his underlying metrics that are worrisome.

Statcast tells us Kwan's hard-hit rate has dropped to 8.4%, his exit velocity to 83.0 mph, and his barrel rate to 0.5%. These aren't just career lows. They are in the first percentile in the league. His xwOBA (.303) is above his actual wOBA (.279), which signals that bad luck can be a factor here. However, his xBA is just .229, which isn't high enough past his actual batting average to make luck the prime culprit.

It should be noted that Kwan's pre-2026 seasons featured a lot of soft contact at the plate. Hard-hit rate has never been his strong suit. That makes his current collapse an even bigger problem.

Three Possible Explanations - and What the Evidence Supports

Approach Problem?

Here's where things get interesting, because not all of Kwan's underlying metrics are subpar. His chase rate (21.9%) in 2026 is in the 90th percentile, his whiff rate (7.4%) is in the 100th percentile, and his strikeout rate (10.0%) is in the 98th percentile. Long story short, Kwan still exhibits elite plate discipline and doesn't chase bad pitches.

So, his approach at the plate isn't the problem.

Health Issue?

This is speculation, since neither Kwan nor the Guardians has confirmed a physical impediment. But it's still worth looking at.

Kwan missed time this season due to neck stiffness. Vogt told the media that Kwan simply woke up stiff and needed a day off. Fans and fantasy managers have still noted that Kwan's move from left field to center field this season could be the reason. And what can throw off batting mechanics for an outfielder? A stiff neck or shoulders.

But, again, neither player nor team has said this was anything other than a minor injury.

Profile Limit?

Kwan has had a contact-only hitter profile throughout his MLB career. Unfortunately for him, sacrificing power to put the bat on the ball at all costs gives contact-only batters a very low ceiling. And a mechanical shift leaves zero-power, contact-only hitters extremely vulnerable.

Being a contact-only hitter worked for Kwan in 2023 and 2024, and his high batting average reflected the positive results. Without power behind his plate attempts in 2026, his margin for error is almost non-existent.

What the Guardians' Lineup Move Actually Means

Sure, Kwan told MLB.com that he "feels good," and Vogt said he didn't think moving him down the lineup for the first time in his career was "a permanent change."

But when a manager demotes a two-time All-Star to sixth in the lineup, the decline is real enough to act on and not just a temporary slump.

Then, you add Angel Martinez to the mix. The 24-year-old utility man has filled in that first spot very well, launching six leadoff home runs since the move. (And boosting his fantasy value in the process.) Even with Martinez getting sidelined with a foot ailment, Kwan's stay in the back half of the batting order could be longer if he doesn't show signs of improvement.

The Fantasy Verdict: Hold, Sell, or Drop?

The only compelling argument for holding Kwan at his point is if the neck stiffness is the primary cause of his decline. Health-driven decline at the plate has a clearer path to recovery than a mechanical issue. But if Kwan's fully healthy and still posting an 8.4% hard-hit rate in late June, there's no point in keeping him.

Selling Kwan would work in deeper leagues where his name and pedigree help him retain some roster value. If another manager isn't hip to how bad his xwOBA and hard-contact stats are, Kwan could garner a reasonable return.

When it comes to shallow leagues, though, it's time to drop and upgrade. Outfield options are readily available on the waiver wire in 10-12 team leagues, and some of them likely have much better underlying metrics. With the cause of decline still unknown, fantasy managers are best off moving on from Kwan.

Questions About Steven Kwan, Answered

What is wrong with Steven Kwan in 2026?

Kwan is posting career-low contact quality numbers, including an 8.4% hard-hit rate, an 83.0 mph exit velocity, and a 0.5% barrel rate. While his xwOBA (.303) is above his actual wOBA (.279), his xBA (.229) suggests luck alone does not explain the decline.

Should I drop Steven Kwan in fantasy baseball?

In shallow leagues, dropping Kwan is a reasonable move. His production has declined significantly, and the cause of that decline remains unresolved while other outfield options may offer better underlying metrics.

Is Steven Kwan hurt in 2026?

Kwan missed time due to neck stiffness, but neither he nor the Guardians have identified it as the cause of his offensive struggles. The issue remains a possible factor rather than a confirmed explanation.

What is Steven Kwan's xwOBA in 2026?

Kwan's xwOBA is .303, compared to an actual wOBA of .279. That gap suggests some bad luck, although his .229 xBA indicates the potential rebound may be limited.

Has Steven Kwan been moved out of the leadoff spot in 2026?

Yes. Stephen Vogt moved Kwan from the leadoff role to sixth or seventh in the batting order as his struggles at the plate continued.
