Yankees Facing Jazz Chisholm Jr. Decision After Trent Grisham News

The Yankees' outfield depth has been tested to begin the month of June. Captain Aaron Judge went down on June 5 with a rib fracture, and now Trent Grisham has gone on the shelf with a hamstring strain on June 13.

For Saturday and Sunday at the Toronto Blue Jays, the team played their youngsters in the outfield. 25-year-old Spencer Jones took over in center field for Grisham, and 23-year-old Jasson Domínguez was in right field for Judge.

Having had time to get a feel for Grisham's injury, manager Aaron Boone gave an update on the lefty's status Tuesday.

With Grisham being sidelined until July at least, the Yankees will have to play with a "next man up" mentality in the outfield. Something that might be in the cards could be for second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move back to the outfield.

Chisholm Jr. is a dynamic athlete, and played center field in 2023 and 2024 with the Miami Marlins. In this scenario, Jones would move to right field and Domínguez would slide to the bench or Triple-A again.

Chisholm Jr. has played in 67 games this season, putting up a .229 batting average, .318 on-base percentage and .718 OPS (.908 since May 15). He has nine home runs and 29 RBIs.

Domínguez was on the injured list with a shoulder problem prior to the weekend series in Toronto. After news of Grisham's exit during Friday's game, the outfielder was called up during his rehab assignment.

The 23-year-old may not be fully ready to go in the outfield. This could cause Chisholm Jr. to be called on for a few games at least.

There is also the problem of the José Caballero and Anthony Volpe infield situation. Boone seemingly has this obsession with getting Volpe in there whenever possible, even though Caballero has been statistically better since he got to New York at 2025's trade deadline.

What might happen is for both to play, Caballero at shortstop and Volpe at second base. When the latter was rehabbing at Triple-A, he began to work at second base during practice and warm-ups.

This would put Chisholm Jr. out of the lineup. The Yankees need his bat in there, which means that someone in the outfield would have to go to the bench for the time being.
