Brewers Teammates Share NL Player of the Week Honors

The Milwaukee Brewers saw two of their brightest stars put on an unbelievable show last week.

On Monday, Major League Baseball gave out Player of the Week honors from June 8 to June 14. For the first time this season, two players shared the award, both from the Brewers: the National League's recipients were starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski and outfielder Jackson Chourio. This is the second time Misiorowski won the award this season, having previously won it just two weeks ago. Meanwhile, this is the first time Chourio secured the honor in his career.

In the American League, the award was given to outfielder Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins.

Misiorowski's Masterpiece

The Miz needed just one start to earn the award, which came on June 12 against the Philadelphia Phillies. That night, he put up one of the most dominant pitching performances in baseball history.

Misiorowski needed just 95 pitches to finish a shutout, recording his first career Maddux (a shutout in less than 100 pitches). Somehow, that's the least impressive part of his performance, because he also faced the minimum 27 batters and struck out 15 while walking none.

A single by Kyle Schwarber in the fourth inning was the only thing that separated Misiorowski from a perfect game, and he even redeemed that blemish by getting Bryce Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play two batters later. The outing was bookended by strikeouts: the first came on a 104.5 mph heater to Schwarber, and the last came on a 103.1 mph fastball to Justin Crawford.

It was an all-time pitching performance by a truly unique player, who lowered his ERA on the year to a miniscule 1.34. Misiorowski's 1.69 FIP, 131 strikeouts and 3.9 fWAR are all the best in Major League Baseball. Although he was denied the NL Pitcher of the Month Award for May by Philadelphia's Cristopher Sanchez, the Miz could very well be the favorite for the NL Cy Young Award at the moment.

Jackson Chourio Catches Fire

Not to be outdone by his teammate, 22-year-old Jackson Chourio enjoyed a monster week at the plate. Despite missing the first month of the season with a fractured left hand, he got off to a strong start by hitting .282/.344/.462 in his first 28 games.

But since June 7, Chourio has found another gear. He won Player of the Week by going 13-for-29 (.448) and bashing five home runs over a six-game span. If that span is increased by a game, then Chourio is 16-for-35 (.457) with a ridiculous .943 slugging percentage thanks to a pair of doubles and the aforementioned five round-trippers.

On the season, Chourio is slashing .322/.370/.572 with nine home runs, a 161 wRC+ and 1.9 fWAR in 35 games. Had he not missed the first month, he'd probably be in the NL MVP conversation.
