Former High School Football Player Karmelo Anthony, 19, Found Guilty
Former Texas high school football player Karmelo Anthony, 19, was officially found guilty in his murder trial on Tuesday.
Anthony was arrested and charged in a fatal stabbing of then-17 year old high school athlete Austin Metcalf. Anthony and Metcalf had a heated interaction at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, that turned deadly. Anthony reportedly admitted to stabbing Metcalf out of self defense during the meet in April of 2025.
On Tuesday, the jury in the case delivered a guilty verdict, after deliberating for hours. Anthony is now facing between 5 and 99 years in prison.
Prosecutors pushed for a conviction, while Anthony's attorneys argued he was acting out of self-defense.
"The case centered on a confrontation under a team tent that ended with Metcalf being stabbed once in the chest. Prosecutors argued Anthony turned a dispute into a deadly encounter ... while the defense maintained he acted in self-defense," TMZ Sports reported on Tuesday.
"As TMZ previously reported, jurors heard from students, coaches and cops -- while also seeing surveillance and body cam footage and hearing 911 calls from the scene. One of the most emotional moments came when Austin's family sat through footage showing first responders desperately trying to save his life."
Anthony broke down in tears following the ruling
Anthony reportedly could be seen crying as the verdict was read by the jury on Tuesday afternoon.
"Karmelo Anthony breaks down in tears you can hear inside courtroom. His bond has been extinguished he is in the custody of Collin County Sheriff," J.D. Miles reported.
The jury reportedly deliberated for roughly three hours before delivering the guilty verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
Anthony could now be spending the rest of his life in prison.
Metcalf's family continues to mourn the loss of their teenage son, who played high school football in Texas.
