Mike Joy Shares Behind-the-Scenes Story of Ned Jarrett's Famous 1993 Daytona 500 Call
Ned Jarrett died on Thursday, June 5, at the age of 93. Not only was he one of the greatest racers in NASCAR history, but he is one of the best to ever call a race on radio or television. Mike Joy, longtime Fox Sports play-by-play announcer, learned a lot about broadcasting from Jarrett over the years.
Mike Joy shared a kind message remembering Jarrett following the news of his passing. Joy also shared a little behind-the-scenes story about the end of the 1993 Daytona 500. It was in that race that Ned called his son Dale to the line as the younger Jarrett won the Great American Race over Dale Earnhardt Sr.
"I love how this came to happen," Joey posted on social media. "With one lap to go in the Daytona 500, CBS-TV producer Bob Stenner his his 'all call' key and barks 'Everybody lay out! ... Ned, be a dad, and call your boy home.' You know what happens next...
"'Well, alright!' Ned exclaims. 'It's the Dale and Dale show, and you know which Dale I'm pulling for...' RIP to one of the best broadcaster and best friends this sport has ever known."
I love how this came to happen.

For those of you who want to see and hear the end of that 1993 Daytona 500, you're in luck. There are plenty of videos online of that moment including the one below.
A touching and fitting way to remember Ned Jarrett. He was a larger than life figure. Such a successful racer, and he hung it all up at the age of 34, just after winning the championship in 1965. He would race 21 of 49 total Cup Series races in the 1966 season.
The work he did on the track and in the broadcast booth helped mold and define generations of NASCAR racing. Rest in peace to Ned Jarrett.
