Blue Jays Share Alejandro Kirk Development After 55 Missed Games
The Toronto Blue Jays are still waiting for Alejandro Kirk's return as he continues to make progress in his recovery. Kirk has not appeared in a major league game since April 3, missing 55 consecutive games after suffering a fractured and dislocated left thumb when a foul tip struck his glove. The injury required surgery and the insertion of a screw into the joint, forcing Toronto's starting catcher to the sidelines for more than two months.
His absence has coincided with a difficult stretch for the Blue Jays. Toronto are currently on a four-game skid, including the first two games of its series against the Atlanta Braves, and enters Thursday at 29-33, 8.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. The Baltimore Orioles also sit at 29-33, leaving the Blue Jays in danger of slipping to fourth in the division standings.
After spending weeks in Dunedin progressing through throwing programs, bullpen sessions, and live batting practice, Kirk was cleared to begin a formal rehab assignment with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays and he wasted no time announcing himself.
Playing in his first game since the injury, Kirk launched a home run in his rehab debut.

Toronto has missed Kirk's production on both sides of the ball. Brandon Valenzuela has filled in admirably and contributed three home runs, while Gabriel Moreno and Tyler Heineman have also helped behind the plate. Still, none can fully replace what Kirk brings to the lineup and pitching staff.
The 27-year-old is coming off the best season of his career. In 2025, he batted .282 with a .348 on-base percentage, a .421 slugging percentage, and 15 home runs across 130 regular-season games and earned a Silver Slugger Award. Kirk also added five home runs in the playoffs, helping the Blue Jays reach the World Series.
There is still work to be done before he rejoins the major league roster. According to The Athletic's Mitch Bannon, Kirk is expected to receive at least 20 at-bats during his rehab assignment before the Blue Jays consider activating him. Thursday's home run accounted for one of those plate appearances.
Assuming he continues to play regularly and avoids setbacks, a return sometime in mid-June appears realistic, though the organization has not established a firm timetable for his activation.
In the meantime, the Blue Jays conclude their series against the Braves on Thursday looking to avoid a sweep.
