Browns GM Andrew Berry Shuts Down Question About 2027 Quarterback Class
The Cleveland Browns made one of the biggest blockbuster trades since their own trade for Deshaun Watson several years ago, sending all-world pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for several high draft picks over the next three drafts. One of those picks is a first-rounder in 2027, which led to a pretty obvious question for Browns general manager Andrew Berry today.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Berry addressed the controversial Garrett trade and fielded questions about the future. One of the questions asked was whether he saw the addition of a new first-round pick in 2027 as an opportunity to firmly address the looming quarterback issue. The Browns head into 2026 with a QB competition between Watson and Shedeur Sanders. A large continent of NFL fans believes the team will effectively be without a QB by the end of the year.
But Berry poured cold water onto that line of questioning. He dismissed it "premature" before the Browns play their 2026 season.
"We're way too premature to figure out how we're going to deploy that asset," Berry said. "We've got an entire season to play. We've got a group of players that we're really excited to see this fall and, you know, we'll deal with 2027 in 2027."
Planning for the Future
The Garrett trade gives the Browns a lot more ammo to retool the team as the 2020s come to a close. On top of that first-round pick in 2027, they also received a second-round pick in 2028 and a third-rounder in 2029.
The problem is, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has already sacked a head coach since Berry arrived in 2020. Just because Berry made the trade, it doesn't mean that he'll be around long enough to enjoy the fruits of it.
At the end of the day, Berry needs to assemble a team that can win. And while Jared Verse is a good player to receive in the trade, there's not much he can do to dictate wins and losses if the quarterback situation stays bad.
Is Berry doomed to get fired before the 2027 NFL Draft?
