Russell Wilson Makes Major Career Decision Ahead of NFL Season: Report
With uncertainty surrounding Russell Wilson and his career in the NFL, the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback reportedly made a big decision regarding his future.
On Monday, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Wilson accepted an offer to join the CBS Sports team rather than playing football in the 2026-27 season.
According to Schefter, Wilson will be part of the pregame show and have other unspecified involvement in CBS Sports programming or content.
According to Front Office Sports, Wilson had an offer to become a New York Jets backup QB. Instead, he replaces Matt Ryan on a CBS Sports coverage team that already features James Brown, Nate Burleson, and Bill Cowher. Ryan left CBS Sports to become president of football for the Atlanta Falcons.
The major decision might seem to imply Wilson’s retirement, but so far it hasn’t been officially announced or reported anywhere. He entered the league in 2012 and spent the bulk of his 14-year career with the Seattle Seahawks.

The 10-time Pro Bowler led the league in NFL passer rating in 2015 and touchdowns in 2017. He also led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl, where they claimed the Lombardi Trophy in 2014, but he’s nowhere near that level in his most recent seasons.
Wilson suited up for the New York Giants in 2025-26, playing six games and starting three. He was 0-3 in those games with 831 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 77.4 passer rating.
While his stats were uninspiring, Wilson still could’ve played as a backup in the NFL, but it seems he may be closer to getting away from his days of playing football. He played his last meaningful NFL season with the Denver Broncos in 2022 and 2023, and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.
With the Giants currently focused on young star Jaxson Dart as their starter, Wilson explored the opportunity to become a backup on the New York Jets, behind veteran Geno Smith. However, no deal materialized from that.
The Athletic's Andrew Marchand initially reported in early May that Wilson might take on a broadcasting role and that CBS Sports was leading in the conversations to have him join their team. Now they’ve made that a reality, but one has to wonder if Wilson will ever return to the NFL or announce the close of his career.
