Sue Bird Takes Side In Ongoing Caitlin Clark, Stephanie White Debate

How much tension is there really between Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and star point guard Caitlin Clark right now?

Over the weekend, Clark was benched by White in fairly emphatic fashion. Clark had racked up some foul trouble early in a loss to Portland. She was not happy on the bench, seen arguing with her head coach.

Things got pretty heated on the Indiana Fever bench, as the WNBA team dropped to a disappointing 4-4 on the season.

WNBA legend Sue Bird weighed in on this on Sunday night. She made it clear that stuff like this happens.

"I think it's frustration. I'm not, like, the best lip-reader. But I think Stephanie White did say ‘defense' a couple times. And Caitlin Clark was in foul trouble this game. And obviously, we know how things are being called. So, I think it's a lot of frustration. But, it's, like, not that crazy. This isn't the first time we've seen this. It doesn't have some deeper meaning to it."

"I've had moments like that with coaches," Bird continued. "I think it speaks to relationships. Player-coach relationships. Like, shoutout Brian Agler. You could say anything to that man. And you could keep it moving. And then I had other coaches, where maybe you couldn't. And you have to learn each other in that way."

Women's basketball legend Cheryl Miller, meanwhile, believes that lines were crossed.

Miller sounds off on the drama

Miller believes that Clark was being "disruptive."

"But you knew the line," Miller replied to Bird. "You knew the line. When it becomes disruptive… Even Kelsey Mitchell kind of chimed in, like, ‘You need to go stand over here and let us regain the calm in our huddle.' When it becomes that disruptive for the entire team, somebody has to step in.'"

The Fever, 4-4 on the year, will next take on the Atlanta Dream on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on Prime Video.
