Champions League Celebration Causes Massive Distraction At French Open
You might have thought that the Champions League Final was being played in Paris for how loud the city got after Paris Saint-Germain won the game today.
A short while ago, PSG defeated Premier League champions Arsenal in Budapest to win the UEFA Champions League Final for the second year in a row. The city of Paris had been holding a watch party at the Parc des Princes stadium - which is both within eyeshot and (apparently) earshot of State Roland Garros.
Tennis players Frances Tiafoe and Jaime Faria learned that the hard way. The two were in the middle of their first set in their third round matchup at the French Open when their match was interrupted by loud cheers. Not only was the watch party loud enough to be heard from half a mile away, people at Roland Garros were cheering as well.
Video shows some fans exploding into cheers after seeing the game's thrilling finish on their smartphones and local TVs. Though slightly more egregious were a couple of fans in the stands at the match that appeared to have trouble containing their emotions despite the requirement for quiet.
Tiafoe and Faria certainly didn't seem amused by the interruption and both of them had to step off for a minute as the officials tried to settle the crowd.
Parc des Princes didn't make it any easier though as they let off a celebratory fireworks display above the stadium.
History for PSG
For years PSG had been maligned for dominating their domestic league but coming up short on the international stage. Between 2011 and 2024, the team won all but four league titles while reaching at least the Round of 16 in every edition of the Champions League.
But even with such legends as Neymar, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on their roster, they could never win the biggest trophy in Europe.
That all changed in 2025, when they finally defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League Final to claim the trophy for the first time in team history.
With today's win over Arsenal, they not only claimed a second Champions League title, they became one of the few teams in history to claim the title in back-to-back years.
As frustrating as it may have been for the tennis players, that's an achievement the entire city can celebrate.
