Pedro Martinez Sends Message to ‘Spoiled' Yankees Fans Amid Injury Concerns

The New York Yankees won their third straight game on Tuesday, defeating the Kansas City Royals 15-1. It was a dominant win, with five different players hitting a home run, including third baseman Amed Rosario, who blasted two of his own.

Led by ninth-year manager Aaron Boone, it's been an impressive season for New York. Going into the series finale against the Royals on Wednesday, the Yankees are 33-22 and in second place in the American League East. They're just 2.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays and are looking to win the division for the first time since 2024.

However, injuries have been a concern for the team, particularly within the pitching staff. The Yankees have four different pitchers on the IL, including Luis Gil (seven-day), Max Fried (15-day), Angel Chivilli (15-day) and Clarke Schmidt (60-day).

It's not something National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Pedro Martinez believes will derail New York's season, though. During a Wednesday appearance on "First Take," the former Boston Red Sox pitcher told Yankees fans to calm down.

"This is the only time I'm going to wish the fan base, this spoiled fan base that the Yankees have, to just relax a little bit, let them play," Martinez said. "Because they do have the talent, they have everything they need, and they are going to get healthier, and that's what they need. They need to get healthier in the pitching staff."

According to MLB.com, Fried, Chivilli, and Gil do not currently have an expected return date. Meanwhile, Schmidt likely won't see action until the second half of the season.

As Martinez mentioned, though, the team is still riddled with talent. Through 55 games, the Yankees are tied for third in ERA (3.19), ranked third in WHIP (1.17) and fourth in opponent batting average (.221).

However, New York did receive some reinforcement over the past month. Both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon made their season debuts in May after beginning the year on the IL.
