Orioles Teammate Opens Up on Pete Alonso's Leadership Presence

Baltimore Oriolesfirst basemanPete Alonso is having a solid first season with the team. After spending seven years with the New York Mets, he left in free agency, signing a five-year, $155 million contract with Baltimore that runs through the 2030 season.

Making him the highest-paid player on the team, the Orioles expected an immediate impact. Through 54 games this season, he is slashing .235/.319/.441 with a .760 OPS. While it's not on par with his usual production, his 48 hits, 10 home runs, 33 RBIs and 30 runs show he has been a productive piece to the lineup.

However, his impact for Baltimore has gone beyond just the stat sheet. During a Tuesday appearance on "Foul Territory," Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser spoke on Alonso emerging as a leader for the team.

"He brings a lot of perspective, Cowser said. "He's been playing for a while and, and playing at such a high level that, you know, he brings a certain perspective when it comes to facing certain guys, certain situations, and, as well as just like his gameplay talk as well. Just even when you're out on defense, just always communicating and, yeah, he's been great... He's very vocal in our clubhouse."

During his seven seasons with the Mets, Alonso was regarded as one of the top voices in the clubhouse. Despite this being just his first year with the Orioles, he's quickly taken over that role with his new team.

At 24-30 going into their Tuesday matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore is trending toward missing the postseason for the second straight year. The five-time All-Star is working on being a key piece to turning things around.
