Patrick Mahomes News Emerges 3 Days Before Big Event in Kansas City

Patrick Mahomes continues progressing toward a return for the 2026 NFL season after suffering torn ACL and LCL injuries in his left knee last December.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was injured during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and underwent surgery shortly afterward. Since then, Mahomes has steadily advanced through rehab, returning to throwing sessions in March while increasing his workload throughout the offseason.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently said Mahomes has been doing "a lot of stuff" during recovery, though the organization has not announced a firm timetable for his return (h/t Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports). The expectation around the team remains that the three-time Super Bowl champion will be ready for Week 1.

Despite the rehab process, Mahomes has remained active publicly throughout the offseason. Earlier this month, he attended the 2026 Met Gala alongside his wife Brittany Mahomes and has continued participating in business and charity work around Kansas City.

Now, Mahomes is set to make another appearance in the city this week.

On Tuesday, organizers confirmed Mahomes will attend the 2026 Big Slick Celebrity Weekend in Kansas City.

"Welcome to #BigSlickKC, Patrick Mahomes," the event posted on social media. "3x Super Bowl champ. 2x NFL MVP. Human highlight reel. Occasional football player, full-time KC legend."

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Returns for Major Kansas City Charity Event

The 17th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend takes place May 29-30 and benefits pediatric cancer research at Children's Mercy Kansas City.

Founded in 2010 by Kansas City natives Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis and Rob Riggle, the event has grown into one of the country's largest celebrity charity weekends, raising more than $30 million for the hospital.

This year's schedule will look slightly different because of FIFA World Cup-related scheduling conflicts in Kansas City. The traditional celebrity softball game at Kauffman Stadium will not take place, with organizers instead hosting a private VIP event Friday before the main Big Slick Party and Show at T-Mobile Center on Saturday night.

Mahomes has become one of the event's most recognizable regular participants. During the 2023 celebrity softball game, he hit an inside-the-park home run, pitched in relief and drew attention for a behind-the-back throw at first base. He also attended the 2024 and 2025 editions alongside Travis Kelce, and helped raise a record $4.5 million at last year's event.

Mahomes' involvement at the upcoming charity event is the latest of his philanthropic efforts. His 15 and the Mahomies Foundation has consistently supported youth programs across the Kansas City area through education, wellness and community initiatives.

While his primary focus remains returning for the Chiefs' season opener, Mahomes continues to maintain a visible presence in Kansas City during the recovery process.
