Max Muncy Injury: Dave Roberts Delivers Update After Dodgers Game

The Los Angeles Dodgers could have Max Muncy back in the lineup sooner than expected after the third baseman avoided a serious wrist injury. Manager Dave Roberts shared a positive update on Muncy ahead of the Dodgers' upcoming six-game homestand.

According to a post by Dodgers Blue on X, Roberts said the swelling in Muncy's wrist has started to go down, and the veteran infielder is expected to begin swinging a bat again on Tuesday. Muncy was seen at Dodger Stadium taking ground balls at third base and playing catch while wearing a protective wrist guard.

Roberts said there is optimism that Muncy could return for Wednesday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies. He also noted that the Dodgers still have not completely ruled out a stint on the injured list, although he feels encouraged by the progress of Muncy's recovery so far.

The 35-year-old suffered the injury last Friday when he was hit on the right wrist by a 95.5 mph pitch during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He stayed in briefly before leaving the game. Initial X-rays came back negative, which provided a major relief for both Muncy and the Dodgers.

"Not feeling great right now but it is a relief. We just gotta monitor the next couple days," Muncy told reporters after the game. "Typically, especially in that area, the X-rays never come back positive immediately, it kind of forms a little bit."

Even if Muncy is healthy enough to return Tuesday, the Dodgers were unlikely to start him against Colorado because the Rockies are expected to use a left-handed pitcher. Muncy has traditionally performed better against right-handed pitching because of the matchup advantage.

Before the injury, Muncy had been one of the Dodgers' most productive hitters this season. He entered the week batting .258 with 12 home runs, 19 RBI, a .363 on-base percentage, and a .515 slugging percentage across 48 games. He has also continued to provide steady defense at third base while playing an important role in the middle of the Dodgers' lineup.

Muncy's patience at the plate and power hitting have helped Los Angeles stay close to the top of the National League standings throughout the opening months of the season. The Dodgers entered Memorial Day with a 33-20 record and held first place in the National League West.

Los Angeles has won eight of its last 10 games and continues to separate itself in a competitive division race. The San Diego Padres remain close behind at 31-21, while the Rockies sit at the bottom of the division standings with a 20-34 record.
