Chiefs Got a Steal in the NFL Draft With Unassuming Fifth-Round Addition

It’s a new era for the Kansas City Chiefs, as they work to come back from their dissipating 2025 season 6-11 season and get back to the big game.

They’ll have the big names back, like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The team will also have a bevy of fresh draft picks looking to make noise their rookie season in the NFL.

So, let’s put the spotlight on one of those unassuming draft picks right now.

Much of the Chiefs’ draft attention has gone to their defensive additions, but fifth-round running back Emmett Johnson is really one of their most interesting picks. The former Nebraska standout put up huge numbers in his senior season with the team, clocking 1,821 scrimmage yards and 15 touchdowns, according to ESPN research. His numbers and record at Nebraska show the kind of complete skill set that didn’t always show up for him in earlier years, because of limited usage, which is likely why he wasn’t drafted sooner.

This pick seems to be a win-win situation for both parties. Johnson enters a good situation in Kansas City, where he could compete for the backup role behind star free-agent addition Kenneth Walker. His value comes from being a balanced back who can run and catch with, of course, enough explosiveness to fit Andy Reid’s offense. With little established competition, he has a real shot to win the job in camp and preseason.

For a late-round pick, Johnson looks like a strong value and a potential contributor right away. That’s rare in such a late selection. The Chiefs have to be absolutely giddy about this pick and what Johnson can potentially bring to the team.
