52-Year-Old Bartolo Colón Jokingly Offers Mets His Services

The New York Mets lost 12 games in a row and held the worst record in MLB for a stretch in April. The Mets are off to a better start in May, having won three in a row against the Colorado Rockies before losing the final game of the series on Thursday.

But they’re still 14-23, which is nowhere near good enough for a club with the second-highest payroll in baseball this year (via ESPN).

Nostalgia is always potent, but it’s never stronger than when current circumstances are bleak. Mets faithful just got a healthy dose.

Thursday is the 10-year anniversary of Bartolo Colón’s best day. Sure, he won the AL Cy Young in 2005, but nothing compares to May 7, 2016.

Colón pitched 6.2 innings and struck out five to collect a 6-3 win for the Mets over San Diego. That part was impressive because Colón was 42 years old, but the game became iconic when Colón belted a 357-foot home run in the top of the second. It was his first and only home run of his 11-team, 21-year MLB career, and he became the oldest player to hit his first major-league home run in league history.

The Mets posted the clip of Colón’s homer, and Colón had an epic response.

“I might have more in the tank,” Colón replied on X.

Mets fans in the replies didn’t disappoint, either. One named Jay posted a photo of a sign showing Colón with the message, “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Others called for the moment to be immortalized in the Louvre, while another brought everyone back to Earth: “His bat is better than 4 of the guys in today’s starting lineup.”

More fans were calling for Colón, who will turn 53 on May 24, to come help out the Atlanta Braves or Los Angeles Angels. The Braves are tied for the best record in baseball, so they don’t need a nostalgia play. But, hey, the Angels (15-23) and Mets could use help selling tickets. What could it hurt, other than Colón’s arm?
