‘Completely Gutted': Ryan Reynolds Reacts to Wrexham's Final-Day Playoff Miss
Wrexham AFC saw their promotion dreams slip away on the final day of the EFL Championship season after missing out on a playoff spot. A result that had co-owner Ryan Reynolds visibly emotional.
Wrexham were in the driver's seat going into the final game day, but somehow managed to be held to a 2–2 draw against Middlesbrough. That result proved insufficient to secure a top-six finish, which is not enough to get them into the top six.
The Welsh ultimately finished 7th in standings, 2 points off the playoffs. It's a cruel blow given they've been right in the hunt until the final whistle.
Wrexham had fought back during the match and gave the impression they could get the 3 points they needed, but were unable to find a winner, bringing their push for a historic fourth consecutive promotion to an end.
Reynolds Vents Frustration after Wrexham Heartbreak
After the final whistle, Ryan Reynolds shared an emotional message on Instagram: "I'm gutted, beyond gutted - but i'm also ridiculously proud of what we've achieved this season. We've come on a huge amount in five years and today's result was the best in our 150+ year history by far. more to do but for now we've got a whole lot to be proud of Reds ."
The post really captured the desperation of the team, but it was also showed just how far Wrexham have come under Ryan and co-owner Rob McElhenney in a relatively short space of time.
Wrexham will now have to stay in the Championship for at least another season, just a few points short of the next step up to the Premier League.
Wrexham was on the verge of making it four promotions in a row, which would've taken them all the way to the very top, and become the first team i history to ever do so. Although it may be difficult to get a grip on the bigger picture at the moment, this season has been one of the most successful in Wrexham's history.
The club is still moving upwards, and the Premier League promotion will have to wait next season.
