Mauricio Pochettino Calls Out Tottenham Owners Over Lack of Signings- 'It's a Shame'

This season, something unusual is happening with one of the clubs that make up the famous "Big Six."

Tottenham Hotspur are in the relegation zone, just two points away from safety with fewer than four matches left to play in the Premier League.

Additionally, the club suffered a major blow when Xavi Simons, a key player in the squad, sustained a serious injury and will miss the remainder of the season.

There's also a reality that predates this difficult moment for Tottenham: the club's leadership has struggled in the transfer market, both in terms of recruitment and in bringing in enough players to compete.

In an episode of The Overlap, Mauricio Pochettino explained that during his time in charge of Spurs, the lack of signings made it harder to compete for trophies.

During his time as head coach of Tottenham, the now USMNT head coach came close to winning the Champions League, losing the 2019 final 1–0 to Liverpool FC, and spent several years competing in Premier League and Champions League spots, even challenging for the top of the table.

However, Pochettino explained the difficult situation he faced when trying to request signings to improve the squad.

"We were competing in tournaments for 18 months without a single signing; it was a record in the Premier League."

Adding: "They used to tell me at the club, ‘Yes, we have money, but not enough to buy a player who can improve the squad or make a real impact."

Today, soccer is all about signing players who can strengthen the squad and compete on all fronts.

Nevertheless, the Argentine manager explained that without signings from one season to the next, it's difficult to stay at the highest level, and that was the final step they were missing.
