Anthony Davis Reveals Major Career Goals Before NBA Retirement

Anthony Davis joined the Washington Wizards this past season following another trade in his career, this time after the shortest stint with a team so far.

He was previously part of a blockbuster deal for the Los Angeles Lakers to acquire superstar Luka Doncic from the Mavericks. After participating in only 29 games with Dallas between 2025 and 2026 due to injury concerns, he was traded to the Wizards along with other Mavericks’ teammates in exchange for multiple players and picks.

With that, he went from one non-contending team to another. With the Wizards, Davis joined his second-straight squad that could land this year’s No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, though, after briefly having Cooper Flagg as his Mavs teammate.

With all of the trades and Davis being injury-prone throughout his career, one might think his NBA retirement is approaching soon. According to Davis, who has numerous All-Star appearances and a championship with the Lakers, he still has a lot he wants to accomplish before he finishes his playing career.

While speaking with NBC “Today” host Craig Melvin on the “Glass Half Full” podcast, the 33-year-old Davis revealed some of the career goals he wants to achieve before he retires from the league.

“Haven’t got MVP. Haven’t got Defensive Player of the Year. I want the parade for the championship,” he told Melvin, mentioning that he never got one due to winning with the Lakers during the “COVID year.”

“I want to try to get 20,000 points. I want to play 20 years,” he also admitted. “I have a list of things I still want to do.”

For those wondering, Davis, who joined the league in 2012 with New Orleans, would need to play for another five or six years to hit the 20-year-in-the-league goal. He’s close to surpassing that 20,000 points goal, as he currently has 19,385 for his career.

Getting that parade might take some time. Davis also admitted during his chat with Melvin that he’s on what looks like a “very bad” team from the outside, and that it “takes time” to go from bad to a contender.

However, the Wizards could be looking towards brighter days in D.C., thanks to adding former All-Star Trae Young, along with Davis, to the lineup. In addition, they have a high chance of getting the No. 1 pick or potentially landing in the top five of the NBA Draft in June.

That could bring them a star like BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, Kansas’s Darryn Peterson, or Duke’s Cam Boozer to further bolster the roster. Several of those players would make for quite a front court with Davis, once he’s back on the court healthy again.
