Victor Wembanyama Joins Shaquille O'Neal in NBA Playoff History
The San Antonio Spurs took a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, notching a 114-93 victory in Game 4 at the Moda Center.
The Spurs were led by a masterful performance from NBA MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama, who returned to the court following his one-game absence as he progressed through the NBA’s concussion protocol.
Wembanyama finished the game with 27 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, four steals and seven blocks.
With this stat line, Wembanyama is the first player since Shaquille O’Neal to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks in the NBA playoffs. Wembanyama is also the first player in recorded NBA history to notch more than 25 points and five blocks in his first postseason game on the road.
“In his masterful Game 4 performance, Victor Wembanyama became the first player to record 25+ PTS, 10+ REB, and 7+ BLK in a postseason game since Shaquille O'Neal on May 9, 2004,” the NBA wrote in a statement on social media.
Wembanyama suffered a head injury in Game 2, and was unable to take the court for the Spurs in Game 3.
“It’s special, obviously,” Wembanyama said after Game 4. “I had lots of emotions in me before the game, obviously, excitement, frustration. So, I let it all out today.”
Spurs veteran Devin Vassell heaped praise on Wembanyama after his stellar Game 4 performance.
“That’s Vic being the best player in the world and we know that he can do that,” Vassell said. “For him to be able to dominate both ends of the floor doesn’t even really come as a surprise anymore. You expect it. You expect that type of greatness from him and that’s what we need from him every game.”
Game 5 will tipoff at 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday night.
