Leicester City Relegated to Third Tier a Decade After Premier League Title

A decade ago, in 2016, Leicester City made the sports world believe in fairytales.

No, this was not a story of a mere underdog toppling a giant in a single-game series or even a playoff matchup.

With worse odds than getting struck by lightning, the Foxes of Leicester put together a season that will never be forgotten in the English Premier League.

They toppled the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea to keep a magic run that never lost steam, capturing the most prestigious trophy in English sports.

It was a season that fans would trade their entire lives to witness.

And as if Leicester City made a deal with mythical powers to win the Premier League, 10 years later, those forces have returned to take back what’s theirs.

The Foxes were officially relegated from the second division of English football, the Championship, on Tuesday, following their drop from the Premier League a campaign earlier.

Leicester City are only the fifth team in Premier League history to have back-to-back drops from the top division to the third.

Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha issued a statement following the relegation.

“To our fans, Relegation to League One is now confirmed. As Chairman, that responsibility sits with me. There are no excuses. We have experienced the highest highs and now the lowest lows, and the pain is shared by all of us. I am truly sorry for the disappointment we have caused. I understand the strength of feeling among our supporters, and we do not take your support for granted, especially at moments like this.

“Our focus now is on what comes next. We will take the necessary decisions to move the Club forward, working together to rebuild, improve, and restore the standards expected of Leicester City. Our objective is clear – to respond strongly and compete to move this Club forward again. We will face this head-on. We will keep going. Together. Top.”

Over 3,000 people commented on the team’s official X post about their fall into the third tier.

The Foxes still have two games remaining in their season. They’ll first play Millwall on Friday before saying goodbye to the Championship a week later on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers.
