Eagles Stand to Save $7 Million on A.J. Brown as Patriots Show Strong Interest

The Philadelphia Eagles could be heading toward a major offseason decision with A. J. Brown, and the New England Patriots appear to be one of the strongest teams in the mix.

Brown has been linked with a move away from Philadelphia for a while, and New England makes a lot of sense as a landing spot given the Patriots' need for a true No. 1 receiver for Drake Maye. There is also the connection with Mike Vrabel, who coached Brown earlier in his career.

The timing, though, is important for the Eagles. If they wait until after June 1 to make a deal, they can spread Brown's cap hit over multiple years and save roughly $7 million in the process which was confirmed by Spotrac on X.

That means even if New England is pushing hard for a trade, Philadelphia may be willing to hold off for a few more weeks before making anything official.

A Detailed Breakdown of How the A.J. Brown Trade Might Unfold

The idea of A. J. Brown joining the New England Patriots is starting to feel more realistic by the day, but the biggest holdup appears to be timing rather than either side backing away from a deal.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, there is a major financial incentive to wait until after June 1 before making any move official. Trading Brown before then would leave Philadelphia with a much larger cap hit in 2026, while waiting allows the Eagles to spread that money out and save roughly $7 million. For a team that still expects to compete, that flexibility matters.

There is also the question of draft compensation. Around the league, the 2026 draft class is not viewed as especially strong, particularly late in the first round where New England is currently picking. Because of that, Philadelphia may prefer future draft assets instead of rushing into a deal tied to this year's class.

From the Patriots' perspective, Brown would instantly solve one of the biggest issues on the roster. Drake Maye showed enough last season to convince everyone he can be the franchise quarterback, but New England still lacks a true No. 1 receiver. Brown would change that immediately and give Maye the type of reliable target young quarterbacks need.

If Brown does arrive, it could completely change the Patriots' draft strategy. Instead of feeling pressure to draft a wide receiver early, they could focus on other needs like offensive tackle, pass rusher or secondary depth.

Meanwhile, the Eagles already appear to be preparing for life after Brown. With DeVonta Smith still in place and more receiver depth added this offseason, Philadelphia may feel comfortable moving forward without him.
