NHL Announces Historic Connor McDavid News Ahead of Stanley Cup Playoffs
Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid is considered by many to be the best hockey player on the planet.
And aside from a few Nathan MacKinnon or Nikita Kucherov fans, that statement isn't likely to get much of an argument from anyone.
For the ninth time in his career, and for the sixth consecutive season, McDavid finished above the 100-point mark, leading the NHL in scoring for the sixth time in his career.
McDavid tallied four assists in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks in the Oilers' regular-season finale. That performance was an exclamation point on a 48-goal, 138-point season for McDavid, which put his name in the NHL record books.
"ELITE COMPANY FOR MCDAVID!! 👏 Connor McDavid is the fourth player to win at least six Art Ross Trophies! #NHLAwards," the NHL announced on Thursday.
The historic accomplishment puts McDavid in elite company.
The other three players to win six or more Art Ross trophies, given annually to the NHL's points leader, are Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Gordie Howe.
Gretzky has the most with 10, while Howe, Lemieux, and McDavid are tied for second-most with six.
McDavid led the NHL in scoring, clearing Kucherov, the second-highest scorer, by eight points. His 48 goals were also third-most this year, behind only MacKinnon (53) and Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield (51).
In his 11-year NHL career, McDavid has totaled 409 goals and 1,220 points across 794 games. He's only scored fewer than 30 goals twice - during his rookie season (16) when he played just half the season, and last year during his injury shortened 2024 season (26).
The only time McDavid has scored less than 97 points was his rookie year when he tallied 48 points in 45 games.
