Boston's Jarren Duran Explains His Obscene Gesture to Twins Fan
The Boston Red Sox lost 6-0 to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
That by itself isn’t newsworthy. Boston is 6-11, tied for the worst record in MLB in the early goings of the 2026 season.
Red Sox All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran grounded out to start the top of the fifth inning. That also isn’t newsworthy by itself. But then, Duran was caught on camera flipping off some fans while jogging back to the dugout.
Duran shared an iron-clad defense after the game.
“Somebody just told me to kill myself,” Duran said, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “I’m used to it at this point, you know? I mean, [expletive] happens. I mean, I’m gonna flip somebody off if they say something to me, but it is what it is. I shouldn't react like that, but that kind of stuff is still kind of triggering.”
“I didn’t really tell anybody [on the team], so that’s on me,” Duran added. “Just trying to hold it in, not really bring that up to the team. I mean, we’re trying to win a game. I shouldn’t even bring that up to anybody. It’s not really something where I want to be like, bro, you should have heard what this guy said to me. That's not the most important thing. The most important thing is winning the game, and it just happens.”
Duran vulnerably shared his experiences with depression in the eight-part Netflix series “The Clubhouse: A Year With The Red Sox,” which documented the Red Sox’s 2024 season and premiered last April.
Boston drafted Duran in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft, and he made his major-league debut on July 17, 2021. His breakout season came in 2024, when he earned his first All-Star selection and led MLB in doubles (48) and triples (14).
So far this season, Duran is hitting .182/.274/.291 with one home run and 10 RBI across 14 games.
