There's a lot going on with the Air Jordan 12 "University Gold," which is kind of crazy considering the simplicity of the color blocking on the AJ12 and this colorway specifically. This is a bold 12 with big black-and-yellow energy. It's so black and yellow that it's impossible for me not to see Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates imagery in my head when I look at them. The Gary Payton Lakers connection is what makes this colorway more interesting than it looks on the surface. The shoe draws directly from the "Away" Air Jordan 12 PE that Payton wore during his lone 2003-04 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, using nearly identical black and University Gold blocking. That context turns a clean GR into something with a real story behind it.
