Blue Jays' John Schneider Announces Trey Yesavage News Before Brewers Game

The Toronto Blue Jays are going through a difficult stretch early in the 2026 season, sitting at 6-9 and in fourth place in the American League East. Injuries have hit the pitching staff particularly hard, thinning out the rotation and forcing the club into more bullpen games than anticipated.

One of the most significant absences has been right-hander Trey Yesavage. The 22-year-old has been on the injured list since spring training with a shoulder issue, and his recovery timeline has become a major focus for Toronto as it searches for reinforcements on the mound.

Yesavage, the Blue Jays' first-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of East Carolina University, made his major-league debut during his rookie season in 2025 and appeared in three starts. He went 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA over 14.0 innings, striking out 16 batters while walking seven. He also posted a 1.43 WHIP and held opponents to a .236 batting average.

Yesavage was particularly impactful in the postseason. He made six appearances in the 2025 playoffs and went 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA over 27.2 innings. He struck out 39 batters and posted a 1.05 WHIP. In the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he appeared in three games and went 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA over 12.2 innings with 17 strikeouts.

Ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided an encouraging update on the young right-hander. Yesavage is scheduled to pitch for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday in Rochester, where he is expected to throw 65 to 70 pitches over four innings (via (Sportnet's Arden Zwelling).

If all goes well, it could be his final rehab outing before returning to the majors.

The update is significant for a Toronto staff in need of stability. Yesavage has the kind of high-upside arsenal and command that the organization believes can make him a long-term fixture in the rotation.

A healthy Yesavage would give the Blue Jays another dependable starter with big-league experience and help reduce the strain on an overworked bullpen. As a result, Schneider and the coaching staff have taken a cautious approach with his rehab, carefully managing his workload at each step.

Toronto is still without several other key arms. José Berríos remains on the injured list with a stress fracture in his right elbow, Shane Bieber is on the 60-day injured list with elbow inflammation, and Bowden Francis is out for the season after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery. Cody Ponce is also sidelined after tearing his right ACL in his first start of the year. Those losses have severely tested the Blue Jays' depth since Opening Day, making Yesavage's progress all the more important.

The Blue Jays will open the series against Milwaukee at American Family Field, with the opening pitch scheduled for 7:40pm ET.
