Dolphins swap backup offensive tackles for Steelers game

The Miami Dolphins will play Monday night’s nationally televised game against the Pittsburgh Steelers without the team’s top backup offensive tackle, and the team’s top special teams player.

Larry Borom and Elijah Campbell were the key Dolphins reserves not made active for tonight’s 8:15 p.m. kickoff against the Steelers.

Borom was replaced by Kendall Lamm, who has served as Miami’s top offensive tackle for the past three seasons. Borom had served as the starting right tackle for 10 games while Austin Jackson recovered from a foot injury he suffered in the season opener. Borom was made active in Miami’s 34-10 win over the New York Jets last week while Lamm was inactive, but he came down with an illness on Monday and was scratched from the game.

The Dolphins also activated offensive lineman Kion Smith from the practice squad, and added linebacker Quinton Bell to the 53-man roster, likely for his special teams help.

Campbell, a reserve safety, has served as Miami’s top special teams performer for the past five seasons, holding the critical gunner role. The gunners are usually the edge players taking on two blockers trying to defend punt returners.

Last week the Jets scored on a 78-yard punt return when Bonner got juked out of position by Isaiah Williams, who scored the second touchdown Miami’s special teams unit had allowed this season. In that game Campbell, who has been nursing ankle and knee issues for the past few weeks, had his participation limited.

Also inactive are cornerback A.J. Green III, receiver Tahj Washington and defensive tackle Matthew Butler. Quinn Ewers will serve as the third quarterback, which means he enters the game if Tua Tagovailoa and his backup, Zach Wilson, suffer injuries that prevent them from returning to the field.
