JuJu Brents expected to start second Dolphins game

Rasul Douglas practiced all week, but the foot injury he sustained two weeks ago will keep the Miami Dolphins cornerback sidelined for the second straight game.

Douglas’ absence opens the door for JuJu Brents, one of the top standouts in last week’s Miami’s 30-13 win against the Buffalo Bills, to start his second straight game for his new franchise.

Brents, a 2023 second-round pick the Dolphins claimed off the waiver wire in September, contributed five tackles, one pass breakup and recovered one fumble last week. He’ll likely play on the boundary, opposite Jack Jones, while safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. share the nickel role.

Ethan Bonner will serve as the only other backup cornerback because Miami didn’t elevate another cornerback or safety from the practice squad.

It’s also possible that Chop Robinson will make his second NFL start in Sunday’s international game against the Washington Commanders, which will be played in Madrid.

Robinson, who missed last Sunday’s game because of a concussion he sustained in Miami’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago, has contributed eight tackles and one sack in the nine games he has played this season.

The Dolphins didn’t call up any of the team’s practice squad edge rushers (Quinton Bell, Derrick McClendon), and didn’t activate Andre Carter II, an outside linebacker Miami claimed off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad a couple weeks ago.

That leaves Bradley Chubb, whose status for Sunday’s game was questionable because of a foot injury he sustained in Friday’s practice, Matt Judon, Robinson and Cameron Goode as the only edge rushers active for Sunday’s game.

That could become problematic if one of more of those edge players gets injured and can’t continue playing.

Also active for his third NFL game is defensive tackle Zeek Biggers, a seventh-round pick the Dolphins have kept on the shelf most the season. Biggers was on the field for 25 defensive snaps last week and might continue to work in a playing rotation with Benito Jones and his fellow rookies, Jordan Phillips and Kenneth Grant. Defensive tackle Matthew Butler was made inactive for the first time this season.

Also inactive was receiver and return specialist Dee Eskridge, who continues rehabbing a shoulder injury.

Quinn Ewers named Miami’s No. 3 quarterback, which means he can only enter the game if Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ starter, and Zach Wilson, his primary backup most of this season, get injured.
