Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is having a blast these days, and he’s even more excited about what’s to come.
Kelce talked Wednesday about the good vibes in the Chiefs facility on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast.
The Chiefs beat the Lions 30-17 on Sunday, and the defense had three sacks and gave up just seven second-half points. Meanwhile, the offense has scored 95 points in three games.
“When the defense is playing like that, and Pat Mahomes is out here, Texas gunslinger, just shooting it all over the field, man, it’s the best,” Kelce said. “And we were rocking and rolling. Had a few big plays on special teams that got us going. And that’s a tough Lions team, and I felt like we got after them in the run game and in the pass game, and guys were downfield blocking for each other.
“The energy right now in the building is electric, man, and one of the most fun teams I’ve ever been on.”
Kelce has had a great two-game stretch with 13 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked Monday about Kelce’s strong play.
“We’ve been giving him a lot of Geritol,” Reid quipped, “and he really has progressed.”
Neither Travis nor his brother, Jason, knew of Geritol, which makes multivitamins among other items.
“Geritol? Is that an aging thing?” Jason asked.
“What is Geritol?” Travis said. “Yeah, look this up.”
“It’s got to be something with old people,” Jason said.
“It’s like from the ‘70s or something,” Travis said.
Jason Kelce later noted an X post from Chase Snyder, who pointed out Travis Kelce’s two-game stretch of solid play has come since the release of fiancée Taylor Swift’s new album. In particular, the song, “Wood.”
That made Travis Kelce laugh and Jason Kelce said dryly: “I don’t know why that’s significant, but it’s funny.”
Ready for Rashee Rice
The Chiefs’ offense has been humming, and it will be getting another weapon as wide receiver Rashee Rice’s six-game suspension is over. Kelce revealed he had a message for Rice following the multi-vehicle crash in Dallas in March 2024 that led to the suspension.
“I’m just happy to get my guy back out there,” Kelce said. “He could put this (stuff) in the ... past. Rashee is such a good dude. When all this happened, I gave him a shout and let him know, ‘Man, listen, we know who you are as a person. Don’t let the world drag you through and make you feel like you’re any less of that.’
“And he’s one of my favorite people and one of my favorite teammates I’ve ever had in the building, because of how he attacks the day, how he lives his life, his generosity and his work ethic and how much fun he has playing this game. And I’m excited for him to get back to what he loves to do the most. And that’s play football.”
Rice played in just four games a year ago before suffering a knee injury, but he had 79 catches, 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2023.
Kelce is expecting big things from Rice.
“We’re about to get the most ferocious version of Rashee Rice, man, I cannot ... wait,” he said. “This guy has been sitting in meetings, listening to plays being dialed up, and I just know he’s ready to get in on the action with us, man.
“And he’s one of the best energy guys on the field. He plays with passion. He plays with physicality. You can have him block in the run game. When he gets the ball in his hands, he’s finishing, he’s running through arm tackles. And he’s such a vital piece to have outside of just being a great receiver, and I can’t wait to get back out there rocking with him, man.”
