Jaylen Wright undergoes surgery, Dolphins add two tailbacks
Jaylen Wright underwent a surgical procedure this week that could force the tailback to miss the first month of the Miami Dolphins’ 2025 season.
“It’s not season-ending, not even close to that, but it will take some time,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said about Wright, the second-year tailback who suffered what is thought to be a knee injury during Miami’s joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars last week.
Wright’s right leg injury, and the calf injury that got De’Von Achane shelved for the past three weeks, left rookie tailback Ollie Gordon II as the only healthy running back on the roster until Thursday’s addition of two veteran backs, who have history with McDaniel.
Jeff Wilson Jr., a seven-year veteran who spent the past three seasons with the Dolphins, was signed to the practice squad a day after he failed to make the San Francisco 49ers’ roster, and Miami also added Jamycal Hasty, who was waived by the New Englnd Patriots earlier this week.
Hasty and McDaniel were together in San Francisco during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, where Hasty contributed 206 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 55 carries, and also caught 30 passes for 188 yards in those two seasons.
The former Baylor standout has since played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Patriots, averaging 4.0 yards per carry and 6.3 yards per reception in the 56 games he’s played. During his NFL career he’s handled a handful of kick returns and has played 488 special teams snaps.
Wilson has handled 140 carries for the Dolphins the past three seasons, gaining 637 rushing yards and scoring four touchdowns. But he fell out of the rotation last season and sparingly contributed in the game he was active for last season. Even when the Dolphins were struggling to convert short-yardage situations, Miami’s coaches refused to give Wilson, one of the team’s larger backs, any carries, which led to frustration on Wilson’s part.
Miami didn’t re-sign him this offseason, but Wilson was picked up by the 49ers in the middle of training camp, returning to the franchise where his career began.
“I think Jeff is in a great spot where he’s mentally ready to be his absolute best self and contribute to this football team in the way that his best self can as an awesome teammate,” McDaniel said.
The Dolphins expect Achane to be cleared for practice next week as the team begins preparation for the Sept. 7 season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, but it’s likely that Wilson or Hasty will be elevated up from the practice squad for that game, and others. Practice squad players can be called up three times to the game day roster before a team must placed them on the 53-man roster to have them eligible to play in a game.
