Dolphins Stock Report (Day 8): Tua leads offense to its best day
The Miami Dolphins defense has shined during training camp’s first week, but Friday was the first day the offense got the best of its counterpart.
While the defense did produce three turnovers — two interceptions, and a Zach Sieler forced fumble Bradley Chubb would have run back for a touchdown — the offense carved Anthony Weaver’s unit up during Miami’s red-zone work and situational period.
Miami also had a short-yardage conversion period where the defense consistently got moved off the line of scrimmage, allowing three straight first-down conversions for every one of Miami’s offensive units.
Here’s a breakdown of what happened in Day 8 of Dolphins training camp.
Top Performers
▪ Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been consistent all camp, rarely ever throwing incompletions. His unit regularly scored touchdowns during Miami’s red-zone work, and they converted first downs during Miami’s situational period. But more importantly, Tagovailoa extended his streak of practices where he hasn’t thrown an interception to eight. Tagovailoa has turned up the volume on his leadership and on-field consistency.
▪ Offensive tackle Patrick Paul had a third straight impressive day, dominating every pass rusher he went against in 1-on-1s, and locking down the left side of the offensive line on a day his predecessor, Terron Armstead, attended practice. After every 1-on-1 snap we witnessed Paul walk up to Armstead, who retired this offseason, to gain some pointers. Paul appears to be ready to replace Armstead as Miami’s left tackle.
▪ Cornerback Jack Jones struggled during 1-on-1s on Friday and got roasted for a touchdown on Wednesday, but the recently added cornerback pulled down his first interception of camp, picking off a Zach Wilson pass in the end zone during a red zone period. Jones, who has pulled down seven interceptions in his previous three seasons, has a reputation as a ball hawk. But he needs to become more consistent to win a starting spot in Miami.
STOCK UP
▪ Matt Dickerson, a six-year veteran who worked his way up from the Dolphins’ practice squad last season, has had a solid camp. He’s consistently winning his reps during 1-on-1s since pads came on three practices ago, and during Friday’s session he had two separate tackles for loss on Ollie Gordon II runs. If Dickerson remains this effective in upcoming joint practices and preseason games it’s possible the former UCLA standout will become the primary backup for Zach Sieler and Kenneth Grant on the defensive line.
STOCK DOWN
▪ Jason Marshall Jr., the Dolphins’ 2025 fifth-round pick, is hot and cold in his first training camp. He pulled down one of training camp’s few interceptions, but during Friday’s practice Marshall was beaten twice for a touchdown by Tyreek Hill during the red-zone specific periods the team was conducting. Marshall has the best size of all Miami’s cornerbacks, but it’s safe to assume he’s got plenty to learn.
Injury updates
▪ Pass rusher Mohamed Kamara left practice and was escorted to an ambulance on the team’s field, but a Dolphins spokesman said he’ll be fine.
▪ Safety Ashtyn Davis will likely be sidelined an extended period, but not the season because of the left leg injury sustained in Wednesday’s practice.
▪ Cornerback BJ Adams, who sustained a concussion on Saturday, returned to practice Friday, but was in a red (noncontact) jersey, which indicates he’s working his way out of the NFL’s concussion protocol program.
▪ Safety Dante Trader Jr. continues nursing a soft tissue issue and will be held out of practice for a week, giving him time to heal for Miami’s joint practices against the Chicago Bears next week.
▪ Tight end Jalin Conyers missed a fourth straight day of practice and has a boot on his left leg.
▪ Linebacker Dejuan Jackson returned to practice. He had his right hand braced.
▪ Offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie, who was signed Wednesday, didn’t finish his first practice with the team.
▪ Corrnerback Kendall Sheffield returned to practice after missing Wednesday’s practice because of an undisclosed injury.
What they said
“Storm is doing a great job. He’s really patient at the line of scrimmage. He isn’t scared to compete,” Hill on Storm Duck when asked which Dolphins cornerbacks have impressed him.
